Excerpts:

Where We Went: amfAR LA Inspiration Gala By the end of the evening, Justin Timberlake was standing on a chair, craning to get a better look, Rihanna was singing along, and just a few feet away, Viva Glam's new spokeswoman Miley Cyrus was gyrating to the music. Their focus of attention? Motown Goddess Diana Ross, who surprised and then rocked the crowd when she took the stage at amfAR's annual Inspiration Gala honoring debonair designer Tom Ford. In fact, most of the well heeled crowd, which also included Kelly Osbourne, Amber Valletta, Sharon Stone, Lea Michele, Milla Jovovich, Lisa Kudrow and January Jones, were on their feet singing "I'm Coming Out" and "I Will Survive" along with Ross. Earlier in the evening, Chris Martin had regaled the crowd with two songs, thanks to his ex Gwyneth Paltrow who hosted the festivities and introduced Coldplay's front man as "Father of the Year." It was quite a night. Not only was the entertainment top notch, more than $3 million was raised for HIV/AIDS research. So what does one wear to a black-tie fete honoring Tom Ford? Karen went for a modern 1920s Hollywood look—a Marc Jacobs black dress from the Fall 2014 collection, Monique Lhuillier ankle high mesh sandals from the Resort 2014 collection and vintage jewelry passed down from her grandmother (pictured above, left). Of course no black tie look is complete without the right glam team, so Karen headed to Robertson Blvd's MACpro store for a professional make-up application. Glynis went low-key and wore a black jersey Topshop gown with slits up the front, but glammed it up with an armload of bling (that included a sparkling Swarovski cuff) and a faux pony Henri Bendel clutch (above, right). The Glam Squad, a new beauty service that does house calls got her hair and makeup ready. When we arrived at Milk Studios we made our way through a sea of handsome men in tuxedos, grabbed some cocktails and took pics at the Microsoft Windows photo booth. We then bumped into Lisa Eisner whose new jewelry collection is now showing at Tom Ford's Beverly Hills Boutique. "It was a dream!" she told us of having her pieces displayed along with Ford's designs. We also chatted up Ashley Madekwe who glowed in a gray Giorgio Armani column and Amber Valletta, looking chic in a black tuxedo by none other than Mr. Ford. Cheers and applause echoed throughout the room during Sharon Stone's stellar performance as the live auction's emcee, but when the man of the hour took the stage to accept his award the crowd hushed. "I'm being honored tonight but that's something that I am somewhat uncomfortable with—although I've been fortunate enough in life to be able to be in a bidding war with Miley Cyrus," said Ford, with a laugh referring to an earlier "battle" with the singer that night over a Ryan McGinley print (Miley won, outbidding everyone with a $300,000 donation to amfAR). Raising his award, Ford concluded: "It is the men and women of this organization who are on the front lines of this fight against HIV/AIDS who deserve to be honored and this award is for them." — Karen Levy (InStyle Senior Entertainment Editor, LA Office) and Glynis Costin (InStyle West Coast Bureau Chief) Read on » |
