Excerpts:
As far as I'm concerned, it's not Halloween until you carve a pumpkin. A Jack-o'-lantern-less Halloween is like a cupcake without icing! Autumn without PSLs! Zac Efron with a shirt! While working on a recent DIY calligraphy pumpkin carving story for InStyle.com, I was inspired to create a similar fancily-scripted InStyle pumpkin. The process took a bit longer than your garden-variety spooky face, but it was well worth it. Here are some tips for pulling it off: 1. Make a night of it. Pumpkin carving is a great excuse for a party! Grab your SO and make it a Date Night or a gaggle of friends (and some pumpkin beer) to make it a Girl's Night. 2. Pop in a movie. Settle in, this is going to take a while. My pumpkin took the entire run of the new vampire classic Blade. Some suggestions that are currently streaming on Netflix: The Nightmare Before Christmas, Carrie (1976), Carrie (2013), Candyman, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), or Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. 3. Prep your station before you start. You don't want to have to keep getting up to wash the pumpkin goop off your hands and hunt for tools. Spread out newspaper or garbage bags and have several options for carving: linoleum cutters, keyhole saws, pins or awls, hearty spoons for scooping, or (my favorites) classic neon-handled carving sets. 4. Make sure the templated words you're using aren't too thin. The thicker the script is, the easier it will be to reproduce. Tape a sheet of paper with the printed words on to your pumpkin. Using a pin, outline the entire word, one pinprick at a time. When you're done, remove the template and you'll have a clear pattern to carve out. 5. Have a recipe for toasted pumpkin seeds ready! The best part of pumpkin carving is the satisfying aftermath of munching yummy roasted seeds in the flickering glow of your new jack-o-lantern.
