Look Who We Met: Matt McGorry from Orange Is the New Black and How to Get Away With Murder

The avid OITNB fans we are, we were already planning on dressing up as five of the show's most well-known characters when we found out that, serendipitously, Matt McGorry (a.k.a. John Bennett) was dropping by our office for a chat. So, in the spirit of All Hallows Eve, we asked if Litchfield's most lovable officer would entertain us by temporarily joining in on our group costume. Fortunately, Bennett was a good sport!

True story: Almost every year my Pomeranian pup has a better Halloween costume than I do. Maybe it's because she's way cuter than me, but Piper always seems to nail the perfect off-the-moment, adorable costume!

Case in point: This year we hit up the Tompkins Square Dog Park Halloween Parade where hundreds of doggies (seriously!) show off their spook-tacular costumes. Piper had two requirements for her costume: (1) it would have to be comfortable to move in and (2) it had to stand out in that massive crowd.

I was inspired by our rad gallery of the 10 Best 2014 Pop Culture Halloween Costumes—specifically, our DIY Angelina Jolie's wedding dress and veil embroidered with her kids' doodles. It was perfect! Relevant, iconic, and as pretty as Piper! I grabbed a yard of cheap tulle, an old white T-shirt, a handful of Sharpies, and a glue gun, opened my copy of People, and constructed a tiny replica for my anipal. Happy Howl-oween!

In the spirit of #ThrowbackThursday, four InStyle staffers from the digital team dug up some of their most memorable Halloween costumes from decades past.

"This is from 1992—it's the day before my 3rd birthday (I'm born on Nov. 1, obvi), and I was Tinkerbell! My family had a Halloween party, which is why I'm also sporting Minnie Mouse face paint (and some crumbs around my mouth). It's definitely one of my favorite costumes I've ever worn. I even tried to recreate it in 5th grade—though to much less success."

—Jennifer Davis, InStyle.com Assistant Social Media Editor

"I was nine or 10 in this photo. Looking at it now, I can instantly recall the smell of my mother's bronzer stick that I rubbed all over my face. I'm supposed to be a gypsy or a fortune teller—but mostly I'm wearing my mom's clothes, costume jewelry, and makeup. The whole look is so '70s!"

— Angela Matusik, InStyle.com Executive Editor

"I love this photo of me in a bumblebee costume from 1990! When did I lose that cuteness? That Halloween, I was with my older cousin Liana who I thought the world of and looked up to. She was a fairy princess! We spent the evening trick-or-treating with my parents around the neighborhood and then tumbled back into my great Aunt and Uncle's house and ate as much candy as we could before we got caught."

—Sarah Balch, InStyle.com Associate Photo Editor

"The pretty pink princess look was my go-to aesthetic as a child—perhaps it's because I always dominated the Pretty Pretty Princess board game and was obsessed with Glinda the Good Witch. Clearly, I had the diva attitude to match. Here I am circa '92, complete with a light-up wand and tiara, ready to load up on candy from the neighbors."

As far as I'm concerned, it's not Halloween until you carve a pumpkin. A Jack-o'-lantern-less Halloween is like a cupcake without icing! Autumn without PSLs! Zac Efron with a shirt!

While working on a recent DIY calligraphy pumpkin carving story for InStyle.com, I was inspired to create a similar fancily-scripted InStyle pumpkin. The process took a bit longer than your garden-variety spooky face, but it was well worth it. Here are some tips for pulling it off:

1. Make a night of it. Pumpkin carving is a great excuse for a party! Grab your SO and make it a Date Night or a gaggle of friends (and some pumpkin beer) to make it a Girl's Night.

2. Pop in a movie. Settle in, this is going to take a while. My pumpkin took the entire run of the new vampire classic Blade.

Some suggestions that are currently streaming on Netflix: The Nightmare Before Christmas, Carrie (1976), Carrie (2013), Candyman, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), or Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.

3. Prep your station before you start. You don't want to have to keep getting up to wash the pumpkin goop off your hands and hunt for tools. Spread out newspaper or garbage bags and have several options for carving: linoleum cutters, keyhole saws, pins or awls, hearty spoons for scooping, or (my favorites) classic neon-handled carving sets.

4. Make sure the templated words you're using aren't too thin. The thicker the script is, the easier it will be to reproduce. Tape a sheet of paper with the printed words on to your pumpkin. Using a pin, outline the entire word, one pinprick at a time. When you're done, remove the template and you'll have a clear pattern to carve out.

5. Have a recipe for toasted pumpkin seeds ready! The best part of pumpkin carving is the satisfying aftermath of munching yummy roasted seeds in the flickering glow of your new jack-o-lantern.

Happy carving!

Making hair tutorial GIFs isn't as easy as it seems (see the hilarious blooper GIF, above). Rita Kokshanian, InStyle.com Editorial Assistant, was demonstrating how to create a Frozen-inspired Queen Elsa braid for Halloween when she got a little more texturizer than she bargained for.

Look Who We Met: Sarah Hyland

OK, so we admittedly fangirled a little bit when our most recent visitor, Sarah Hyland (a.k.a. Haley Dunphy), dropped by our office for a chat. So much so that we even attempted the pint-sized actress' signature pose, which we're henceforth dubbing "the Sarah Hyland"—a demure yet coy over-the-shoulder gaze that's sure to send the paparazzi aflutter.
