We Tried It: Two Looks for the Golden Globes

For major televised awards shows, I've always loved how actresses sometimes change their look from the ceremony to the after-party. To me, it shows that they really took the night's wardrobe decisions seriously—so seriously, that they can't wear just one. Sure, it could be because their ceremony gowns are gigantic and somewhat uncomfortable, and they want to be uninhibited for the dance-all-night party scene. In any case, I think it reads #diva, and I wanted to try it.

I had my chance just under two weeks ago when I attended the Golden Globes with Team InStyle. My night, like many of the stars there, was two-fold. First, I had to be on the red carpet, reporting for InStyle.com. Then, I had to go to the InStyle viewing dinner and award show after-party we host in partnership with Warner Bros. For the red carpet portion of the night, I wanted something functional, something that I could move in, and nothing too flashy (let the va-va-voom be reserved for the nominees!). I dug into my closet and found this vintage Armani gown that I had originally bought for $80 at a consignment store in the Upper East Side several years ago. I added layers of clip-in extensions to my hair (I reused my wedding day extensions), and called it a day.

After the red carpet wrapped, all bets were off. I skedaddled to a room in the Beverly Hilton and changed into a beaded racerback number by Miss Selfridge. My friend Katie, a publicist for the brand, gave me the dress and then I altered it to hug all the right places. It was the perfect party gown! I accessorized with BaubleBar earrings and my own rings.

I'm still not sure which look I loved more. But then again, why choose?
